Impact of Turbulence Intensity and Equivalence Ratio on the Burning Rate of Premixed Methane–Air Flames

چکیده
Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) have been conducted to study the response of initially laminar spherical premixed methane–air flame kernels to successively higher turbulence intensities at five different equivalence ratios. The numerical experiments include a 16-species/25-step skeletal mechanism for methane oxidation and a multicomponent molecular transport model. Highly turbulent conditions (with integral Reynolds numbers up to 4 513) have been accessed. The effect of turbulence on the physical properties of the flame, in particular its consumption speed Sc, which is an interesting measure of the turbulent flame speed ST has been investigated. Local quenching events are increasingly observed for highly turbulent conditions, particularly for lean mixtures. The obtained results qualitatively confirm the expected trend regarding correlations between u/SL and the consumption speed: Sc first increases, roughly linearly, with u/SL (low turbulence zone), then levels off (bending zone) before decreasing again (quenching limit) for too intense turbulence. For a fixed value of u/SL, Sc/SL varies with the mixture equivalence ratio, showing that additional parameters should probably enter phenomenological expressions relating these two quantities.

Preferential Diffusion Effects on the Burning Rate of Interacting Turbulent Premixed Hydrogen-Air Flames
The upstream interaction of twin premixed hydrogen-air flames in 2-D turbulence is studied using direct numerical simulations with detailed chemistry. The primary objective is to determine the effect of flame stretch on the overall burning rate during various stages of the interaction. Preferential diffusion effects are accounted for by varying the equivalence ratio from symmetric rich-rich to ...
متن کاملInfluence of coal dust on premixed turbulent methane–air flames
This study discusses the design of a new experimental platform, the Hybrid Flame Analyzer (HFA) to measure burning velocity of gas, dust, and hybrid (gas and dust) premixed flames. The HFA is used to analyze a particle–gas–air system of coal dust particles (75–90 lm and 106–120 lm) in a premixed CH4–air (/g = 0.8, 1.0 and 1.2) flame. Experimental results show that particles usually increase the...
متن کاملEquivalence Ratio Effects in Turbulent, Premixed Methane-air Flames
Turbulent methane flames exhibit a change in Markstein number as the equivalence ratio changes. In this paper, we demonstrate how these changes in Markstein number are related to shifts in the chemistry and transport. We focus on the analysis of simulations of two-dimensional premixed turbulent methane flames at equivalence ratios φ=0.55 and φ=1.00 computed using the GRI-Mech 3.0 mechanism. The...

Premixed flames encounter gradients of mixture equivalence ratio in stratified charge engines, lean premixed gas-turbine engines, and a variety of other applications. In cases for which the scales—spatial or temporal—of fuel concentration gradients in the reactants are comparable to flame scales, changes in burning rate, flammability limits, and flame structure have been observed. This paper us...
متن کاملEffect of fuel type on the extinction of fuel and air stream diluted partially premixed flames
Previous investigations have demonstrated that the roles of fuel stream dilution (FSD) and air stream dilution (ASD) in suppressing CO2-diluted methane flames are strongly influenced by the level of partial premixing. Herein, we compare this influence for both counterflow and coflow laminar non-premixed and partially premixed flames (PPFs) established with various fuels, including methane, ethy...
